Park Inc now manages crossing guard services for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, the largest school district in the Carolinas. Currently, we have nearly 50 guards helping us provide this service. I recently sat down with our Crossing Guard Coordinator, Tamara Davis, and asked her some questions about her role.

-How long have you been a crossing guard supervisor?
I have been the crossing guard supervisor since 2009. This is my 3rd school year.

-What is your favorite part of the job?
My favorite part of the job is working with the Administrators, parents, staff and children at our schools. Their tireless commitment to educating children makes me work harder to ensure they arrive safely. The children remind me everyday why our job is so imperative.

-What is the hardest part of this job?
The hardest part of this position is wanting to be in so many locations at the same time and manage personnel simultaneously. Every day is a careful balancing act to ensure each school in Charlotte Mecklenburg School District has the attention they require. So far, it has worked well.

-What is the most important part of a crossing guard’s job?
The most important part of a crossing guard’s job is to be present. Not just present physically but mentally as well. If a guard is preoccupied or not paying attention, it could lead to oversights in their service. We pride ourselves in exceptional service to the children of CMS.

-What kind of personality traits do you look for when hiring crossing guards?
The traits I look for in for crossing guard applicants are to be cognizant of traffic laws, approachable, kind, and have the ability to communicate properly and respectfully with individuals of various ages and levels of management. All of these traits are paramount to their success as a crossing guard.

Hiring an outside vendor to manage your parking services can be a daunting task, given the fact that there are literally thousands of valet parking companies in the U.S. While each customer segment has its own unique challenges (employee parking at hospitals, top notch valet service for casinos, efficiency at curbside valet for airports, etc.) there are a few standard questions you should ask when interviewing potential vendors:

1. Is your company a member of the National Valet Parking Association?

If the answer is yes, then you can rest assured that this is a quality company that is committed to abiding by a strict set of guidelines set forth by the NVPA. These standards involve claims handling, security, insurance requirements, employee training guidelines and more. Only a handful of companies are members of the NVPA.

2. Are you insured?

A Certificate of Insurance can and should be provided by any quality parking management provider. Always ask a potential valet parking service company for a certificate of insurance that lists you as an additional insured on the valet company’s policy. Standard levels of coverage should include the following:

General Liability, providing for any mishap causing personal injury, either by premises or attendant. Policy limit: $2,000,000

Garage Keepers Liability, providing coverage for any property damage, such as collision or theft of vehicles. Policy limit: $1,000,000.

Employee Dishonesty Coverage, protects your business from claims for loss of and loss from damage to, covered property such as money, equipment, or security. Policy limit: $500,000.

Umbrella Liability, to provide excess coverage for General Liability in the amount of $10,000,000.

3. How do you screen potential employees?

All valet parking attendants should be screened through several different processes to ensure only quality valets represent your organization .This should include screening for criminal background, driving history, and drug use. In addition, basic personality traits that are consistent with those of successful employees should be actively sought out.

4. How long have you been in business?

Since there are so many parking companies out there, it is important to work with a company that has been in business for a substantial number of years and has an established track record. Ultimately, you want to find a partner, not just a vendor.

5. Will you provide references?

In addition to having been in business for a while, your prospective vendor should be able to provide you with references. These references should be relevant to your service needs and should include current contact information.

In August, Park Inc began offering a brand new service. We are now offering crossing guard services for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools, the largest school district in the Carolinas. Currently, we have nearly 50 guards helping us provide this service.

Park Inc is fortunate to have Tamara Davis heading up this program. She has been the crossing guard supervisor for the Charlotte Mecklenburg Police for the past several years and her experience has proved to be invaluable to our success in taking over this service. In addition, we have retained a majority of the guards from previous years. Each is dedicated to their work and love working with all the kids. We have been thoroughly impressed with how much the crossing guard staff truly cares about the work they do.

As we gain experience in this new venture, we would like expand our crossing guard service expand into other markets. The school system has been pleased with the seamlessness of the transition. With most of the schools on a tight budget these days, outsourcing crossing guard service is an option that more and more will consider. If you have knowledge school systems in your respective areas that have crossing guard services, please let Becca Rouse, rouser@parkinc.com, in our corporate office know. We would love to add this service to schools near you.

As Park Inc continues to grow throughout the United States, so does the corporate office. We are proud to welcome three new colleagues to the corporate office. Amurra Bey has become the face and voice of Park Inc, as she has joined the administration team and taken the ever important role of front desk office administrator. Before coming to the corporate office, Amurra was employed at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport as the office administrator for over a year. At the airport she assisted in overseeing our curbside valet, business valet, and shuttle services. We are glad to welcome her to the corporate office, and appreciate all of her hard work that she has done and continues to do for Park Inc. Not so new to the corporate office, Colin Madden has rejoined the accounting team and has retained his prior position as one of our staff accountants. He first came aboard in June of 2007. Colin works hard to make sure everything runs smoothly financially. We have missed him dearly and we are glad to see him back in the office. Last but not least, Park Inc would also like to welcome Christina Wilbanks to the team. As a newcomer to Park Inc, Christina has expanded our marketing and sales department as our marketing assistant. She has embraced the duty of inside sales for shuttle services, valet services, parking lot/garage management, and much more. She also supports the marketing team by managing minor marketing duties. Christina has helped alleviate the abundance of everyday tasks to ensure that all of our potential clients get the same quality service. We welcome our new employees at the corporate office in Charlotte, NC and would like to sincerely thank them for all of their hard work in helping Park Inc grow and prosper.”

Recently we had a call from a security director at a large hospital in the southeast and he invited us to visit their facilities and discuss parking management options. Upon arrival, the hospital was undergoing a major expansion and the campus was dotted with bulldozers and construction trucks. As first time visitors we were already unsure where to park, and the construction made it just a bit more difficult for us to get to our appointment. As we toured the buildings with the director, he shared that declining patient satisfaction scores seemed to stem from the lack of adequate accessible parking. After finishing the tour of the hospital we asked for detailed information regarding the parking situation, and put together a proposal to would boost the patient satisfaction scores and, ultimately, retain customers.

At Park Inc, our approach to hospital parking management is far different from managing parking for a hotel, casino, shopping center or airport. Folks do not visit hospitals by choice. The circumstances that prompt hospital visits are not the same as the circumstances that might lead customers to the mall or a hotel. We understand the need for compassion. When assembling our team, we look for quick and efficient employees. But just as importantly we look for employees who truly care and want to help your patients and visitors. All of our parking solutions, including valet, shuttle service, and lot / garage management represent a patients’ first impression of your hospital, and we set the tone for their visit. And we work with you to determine just how they see us. We can blend in and look like an employee of the hospital, or we can supply employees with Park Inc uniforms to represent a separate service. We’re flexible!

In addition to our impeccable customer service skills, we are one of only a handful of parking companies belonging to the National Valet Parking Association. In other words, we are held to a high set of standards that include safety, claims handling, customer service, security and more. You can read more about the NVPA at www.nvpaonline.com. For a no obligation quote or for more information on how Park Inc might be a good fit for your hospital or health care system, please call Becca Rouse at (704)377-1755 or email rouser@parkinc.com.

We have received several calls from folks representing casinos over the past few months and noticed a couple of common themes. First, everyone is looking for ways to make their guests’ stay more comfortable and convenient, and one way to do that is to address parking. Valet parking is a convenience that is becoming more and more employed at casinos throughout the United States, and patrons appreciate this service. This becomes even more evident on the occasions when traffic becomes heavy due to special events (concerts, parties, etc.).

Once the decision has been made to offer valet or shuttle service, folks are faced with the decision to either operate it in-house or outsource. Some are able to manage it well enough themselves and somehow find the time to deal with the day to day operations. Others soon realize that they just don’t have the time to stay on top of things and the quality of the service begins to suffer.

When entrusting Park Inc with your casino parking management, we go above and beyond to make sure that the parking services are as high in quality as the rest of your facility’s operations. We understand that the valet/shuttle driver is your guest’s first point of contact with your casino and that is an important first (and last) impression to make. We train our staff to be ambassadors for your establishment. Equally as important, our certified parking managers are well versed in revenue controls and are able to provide detailed reports for you on a daily, weekly and/or monthly basis. We want our service to be a profit center for your casino, and we understand the importance of revenue control. Finally, by allowing us to manage your parking operations you don’t have to bear the weight of liability in the event that something goes wrong. We pride ourselves on quality service, but we’re human and sometimes accidents do happen. Let us handle it….you’ve got other things to do!

We are very happy to announce the implementation of our new referral policy for our current clients! We truly value our relationship with our clients and hope they feel the same about us. They are our best source for referrals, and referrals help to build our business. Our company has experienced award winning growth over the past several years and we hope to continue that trend. That said, we are doing something we’ve never done before. Here’s how our new client referral program will work: If a current customer passes along the name and contact information of a colleague at another facility who may be interested in our services, and that information results in a contract with a term of at least 6 months, we will donate $1,000 to that hospital’s foundation (or charity of your choice if not a hospital) in your name.

Park Inc has a long history of community service and involvement and we’re excited about this opportunity to help in our clients’ own communities. If you are a current client and you know of someone who might be open to a conversation with us about how we can assist them with their parking solutions, whether it be valet parking, shuttle bus service, parking lot management, patient transport or greeter services, please contact our Sales and Marketing Manager (Becca Rouse) at (704)377-1755. Thank you!
